PCB Footprint Expert to Proteus Design Suite

Proteus uses the PADS ASCII Library format to import footprints from PCB Footprint Expert. After creating the part definition in PCB Footprint Expert use the Build Footprint button and then select the Proteus translator.

Proteus supports either the PADS ASCII 2007 or the PADS ASCII 9.5 format and both should work equally well on import. Use the create button on the right hand side of the dialogue to save the part definition to disk.

Next, in the ARES layout module of Proteus, invoke the Import Package command from the Library Menu and select the PADS ASCII file (.asc). The wizard will then launch and present you with the import log.

Warnings are written to the import log for any transform or incompatibility that occurs on import. In most cases, these will have no effect on your usage of the footprint but you should always read the import log carefully before continuing.

After examining and accepting the log, press next to move to the configuration dialogue. A preview of the footprint is shown on the right and layer mapping configuration options are on the left.

The important thing here is to ensure that the layer numbers specified in PCB Footprint Expert match those in the import dialogue.

Adjust if required and press the OK button to move to package configuration screen. This will be largely pre-populated with information from the PADS ASCII file so in most cases simply select a user library and click on 'OK' to exit the dialogue to commit the part to the library.

The process is shown in full in the tutorial movie linked below:

Creating printed circuit boards is a highly specialized task that requires not only solid knowledge in the area but also a set of tools to get the job done well and in good time. A software solution that was specially created for this purpose is Proteus PCB Design.

Proteus PCB Design Software combines Schematic Capture and PCB Layout modules to provide an affordable, powerful, and easy to use the suite of tools for professional PCB design.

Proteus Design Suite is the electronic simulation program that you need on your PC if you’re an engineering student or a professional circuit designer.

Proteus Crack Features

  • Library Parts
  • Assembly Variants
  • Report Generation
  • Design Rules
  • High Speed Design
  • Power Planes

Footprint Libraries

The supplied libraries cover a large range of through-hole components including all the most common IC, transistor, diode, and connector packaging types. It also supplies as standard the full IEC libraries and SMT footprints which include all the standard discrete and IC packaging styles. Both the IPC-782 and the IPC-7351 standard surface mount standard libraries are included.

Templates and Technology Data

The layout module includes a comprehensive scheme for design re-use in the form of board templates and technology data. A user can create several templates representing common projects and then initialize new layouts from the template to preload all of the configured information.

Manual Routing

Manual routing makes no requirement that you start from the ratsnest lines (rubberbanding). You can place tracking in any way you wish and Proteus will remove ratsnest lines as the connections are actually completed. During track placement, the route will follow the mouse wherever possible and will intelligently move around obstacles while obeying the design rules for the project.

Length Matching

Length matching of tracks is an essential step in ensuring correct timing at the signal receiver for high-speed transmissions. Proteus includes support for automatic length matching of tracks via a simple select and matches user interface.

Shape-Based Auto-Routing

The router uses advanced cost-based conflict reduction algorithms proven to maximize completion rates on even the most densely packed boards. For total control of the routing process, users with the advanced feature set (PCB Design Level 2 and higher) can also drive the router either by writing custom routing scripts or by directly entering routing commands interactively.

Power Planes

User placeable polygonal regions within which inner boundaries are automatically created around existing pads and tracking. Change the pads and tracking and the boundaries are recomputed to maintain design rule clearances. Thermal reliefs are supported and you can choose whether to hatch or fill each polygon.

Stitching and Shielding

Via stitching is a technique used to tie together larger copper areas on different layers, helping keep return paths short and to reduce noise on the PCB. You can automatically stitch planes in the suite via a simple context menu command. This gives you control over via style and also spacing and row offsets for the stitching pattern.

Teardrops

Teardrops are often used at the connection point between track and pad to prevent drill breakout during board manufacture. Proteus PCB Design includes comprehensive support for teardrops. When enabled, teardrop connections will be made to all qualifying routes. They are then automatically generated, updated, and removed as you place, edit and delete routes during board layout.

Verification

During manual routing, It checks each track as you place it and warns you if any design rules (physical/electrical) are broken. You can fully customize the board constraints, setting rules by physical regions such as a layer or a user drawn area of the PCB.

Project Notes

Project Notes is an application module in the software for adding documentation or written content to the project. It is a free-form editor so you can add whatever you like in whatever style you want.

3D Visualisation

The 3D Visualisation Tool (3D Viewer) in Proteus provides a way to extrude a layout and view the board as it would appear in real life. This is extremely useful as a design aid during board layout. Navigation, both orbital and ‘fly-by’ is extremely intuitive and mouse controlled.

Output Formats

As well as supporting the basic ability to output your PCB to standard windows printers, It provides a full set of features for professional board manufacturing. Gerber X2 is the primarily supported manufacturing output format. This format, together with an IPC-D-356 netlist and optional assembly drawings, provides an intelligent and complete representation of the PCB to your manufacturer. Traditional Gerber/Excellon output via the RS274X format is also supported.

Proteus
  • Differential Pairs: Support for differential pairs length matching both against other differential pairs and to target length. Work continues on differential pairs and the next release will see the inclusion of support for pass-through components.
  • Report Generation: We’ve introduced a new report for component placement which lists the component references of each part against a grid reference on the schematic border. This is intended for use along with printed schematic documents.
  • Enterprise Licensing: We’ve introduced a cloud licensing solution for both enterprise and education. This allows clients to license a session via a URL and provides a dedicated web portal where seats can be allocated, credentials set and reservations made.

System Requirements:

  • Windows XP/ Vista/ 7/ 8/ 8.1/ 10 (32-bit or 64-bit – all editions)
  • 2 GHz or faster processor
  • 3 GB RAM (memory)
  • 1 GB free hard disk space
  • 1280 × 800 display
